The caretakers ensure that they keep cool by throwing mud on their backs.
But sometimes the job looks more dangerous than it really is.
Here is warthog up close -- they are somewhat more domesticated at the orphanage. I take it back... they are not good looking creatures (except perhaps to other warthogs).
And because warthogs are born with really no necks whatsoever, they need to drop on their front knees in order to eat.
This picture shows you how tall Africans really are!! Ok, not my joke, but I thought it was funny!
Anyways, next are several baby elephants (all under 2 yrs olf) and they get their turn to drink and in the mud bath.
Here's a funny picture where one of the elephants decides to lay on its side right in the middle of everybody - now that's a call for attention. So, the other elephants start playing with it, pushing the laying elephant around. It was pretty funny to watch them interact.
It is surprising how innefficient baby elephants eat. They are powerful creatures and can rip off tons of leaves of all types of trees. However, once they have grabbed their leaves, they sort of throw them in their mouth and often just managed to enjoy a third of their pickings!
